Middlesbrough striker Mido is relishing the new Premier League campaign, and has set his side the target of breaking into the top ten teams in the division.
The Egyptian was signed from Tottenham Hotspur last summer, but has failed to set the pulses racing at the Riverside so far.
He spent a good portion of his time at Boro on the treatment table last season, and took to the field only 12 times in the league, netting two strikes.
Among his problems were a cracked pubic bone and a hernia, and he also served a three-match ban for a high-boot on Gael Clichy at the Emirates.
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate spent £12.7million on bringing Afonso Alves from Heerenveen in January, in an attempt to boost his side’s flagging attack.
However, Mido is confident that he can overcome his fitness and weight problems, and claim a starting berth next season.
Middlesbrough play Carlisle tonight, and Mido could well feature in his first pre-season fixture. He missed last week’s trip to Portugal due to visa complications.
He paid tribute to his striking colleagues and insisted that his side are not far away from qualifying for European competition.
He told the club’s official website: "Jeremie Aliadiere, Afonso Alves and Tuncay are all good strikers, they're different players but I'm sure I can fit with all of them as I have the experience and I can adapt myself to the way my partner is playing.
"It's the way the Premier League sides are now, all four of us offer something different and it will give different options and credits for the manager to play with.
"I want to help the side get into Europe. A top-10 finish would be a reasonable target for us and to achieve that would be great."
