Aston Villa are reportedly set to challenge Portsmouth for the signature of Chelsea midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Former Manchester City star Shaun Wright-Phillips, who scored for Chelsea yesterday in their 4-0 win over Guangzhou Pharmaceutical in China, is now a target for both Portsmouth and Aston Villa, according to reports.
Pompey manager Harry Redknapp has already declared his interest in the England international midfielder, and is confident SWP would be willing to leave Stamford Bridge for the FA Cup winners.
Redknapp said recently: "I know Shaun and his dad [former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright] think Portsmouth would be a good move for him."
However, Redknapp also admitted he might have to sell some of his current players in order to raise the £8million likely to be demanded by Chelsea for the winger. Pompey have just splashed £11million on Peter Crouch, so that could prove an obstacle.
Meanwhile Martin O'Neill, the Aston Villa boss, has reportedly entered the hunt for Wright-Phillips, who struggled to establish himself at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho and Avram Grant, but could well get more of an opportunity to impress Luiz Felipe Scolari.
That could rule out any hasty move buy SWP, while O’Neill has two pacy, penetrative flankmen in Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor, and may be more inclined to use his available budget on strengthening other areas of his squad.
