Serie B side Mantova have announced the shock free transfer signing of former Italy international Tomas Locatelli, a player who had been linked with a move to Inter.
Locatelli was once regarded as one of Italy’s most promising young talents back in the mid-1990s, earning himself a move from youth club Atalanta to AC Milan.
However he never developed as expected, and despite winning two Italy caps in the late 1990s, he has spent the present decade shared between Bologna, and Siena.
Locatelli’s contract with Siena ran out at the beginning of this month, and a few months back he had been heavily linked with a move to Inter in order to help fill their Italian player quota for next season’s Champions League.
The trequartista, who has also been linked with a move back to Bologna, has surprisingly decided to join Serie B outfit Mantova. The 32-year-old will undergo a routine medical tomorrow afternoon, before being presented to the press in the evening.
Locatelli made 30 appearances for Siena last season, scoring three goals.
