Juventus star Mauro Camoranesi has stressed the importance of making it through to the Champions League proper, saying it would complete the journey that started following the Calciopoli crisis.
The Bianconeri were ripped apart by the Calciopoli courts in the summer of 2006, being sent down to Serie B, and losing world class player after world class player.
They have gradually rebuilt though, and just two years on they will find themselves back in the Champions League, providing they can win their qualifying tie next month.
“We have the chance to complete the journey we began two years ago,” Camoranesi told Juventus Channel.
“They've been peculiar seasons. In the first we had to return to Serie A, in the second we had to qualify for Europe.
“Now we need to take a further step and go through the preliminaries. Qualifying for the Champions League proper would be the crowning achievement of this journey.”
Some Juventus supporters have been unhappy with the club’s summer transfer campaign, stating that some bigger names should have been brought in. Camoranesi though believes that Juve have what it takes to do well.
“Juventus are competitive,” he stressed.
“We have the skills in midfield. I think the other teams know they'll be facing the usual Juve, ready to fight to win something important.
“In the big teams it's important to have at least two players for each role, because it allows them to rest when necessary, and we have them. International-level players have joined us, and that's what Juventus needed.”
Camoranesi joined Juve from Verona back in 2002, and has since won three Scudetti with the club, although two of these were revoked following Calciopoli.
