Diego’s Father Adds To Olympic Argument

The father of Werder Bremen midfielder Diego has added fuel to the fire with regards his son’s participation in this summer’s Olympic Games by claiming that Werder had previously agreed to his taking part.

Djair Cunha is looking for clarification from the Bundesliga side after they earlier this week said they would not be allowing him to be called up to Brazilian squad by Carlos Dunga.

“When we agreed the deal with Werder back in 2006, one of the first things I brought up was the Olympics, because I knew that Diego would have a great chance of taking part.

“Werder said they didn’t have a problem with that” Cunha said in an interview with the Brazilian internet site UOL Esporte.

Diego was called up by Carlos Dunga alongside Ronaldinho from Barcelona. The record World Cup winners are looking to win their first Olympic gold medal at this summer’s Beijing games so are looking to take their strongest possible squad along.

Because the Olympic tournament doesn’t fall within the jurisdiction of Fifa, clubs do not have to release players over the age of 23.

Diego, his father and Klaus Allofs are due to meet next week to discuss the issue.
