Inspirational defender and Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has his thoughts set on South Africa 2010 and on lifting the World Cup for a second time
Cannavaro is recovering well from the ankle injury that excluded him from Euro 2008 on the first day of training in Switzerland.
Putting past ghosts to rest, the skipper has let new Italy coach Marcello Lippi know that he is ready to captain another World Cup winning squad.
“If Lippi wants me, I’ll be there to triumph again at the World Cup in South Africa,” said the Real Madrid center back to the Gazzetta.
Asked if he had been in contact with Lippi, Cannavaro responded, “I’ve spoken to both Lippi and Donadoni.
"Lippi wanted to know how long my recovery would take, while I thanked Donadoni for two very beautiful years."
Cannavaro will want to recover in time for Italy’s friendly against Austria on August 20, Lippi’s first match in charge of the Azzurri since the World Cup final.
If determination is anything to go by, don’t bet against the captain being on the team sheet by then.
