Andrei Arshavin's agent claims that Arsenal were serious about acquiring his client but were not able or not willing to meet his salary demands.
Dennis Lachter sounded almost rueful when he admitted to the Daily Express that the top-rated Russian ultimately vetoed the move because the London side were not willing to break their notoriously rigid wage structure for him.
"Wenger was serious about buying Arshavin," said the agent.
"If Andrei could have tempered his financial appetite, it was quite possible he would be playing at the Emirates right now.
"Arsenal were prepared to pay about £15million for him.
"(Arsene) Wenger is indeed a cunning fox who always says one thing and does the other. He wanted Andrei, but Arsenal are the only top English club who do not pay large salaries."
This past weekend was supposed to be a make or break one concerning Arshavin's future, but so far neither Tottenham, Barcelona or Arsenal have been willing to meet the hefty demands of both the Russian club and the player.
