Brazil beat nine-man Belgium in Olympic soccer opener

A late strike by Hernanes earned Brazil a tight 1-0 win over brave Belgium to clinch their first three points in Beijing 2008.
Brazil defeated Belgium in Group C opener in 1-0 in Shenyang on 7 August.

The Selecao were held until the 78th minute when the Sao Paolo midfielder dribbled in the area to hit a wonderful goal in the top corner.

The Belgian side ended up the game with only nine men on the pitch as Vincent Kompany and Marouane Fellaini were sent off by Saudi referee Khalil Al-Ghamdi.

Ronaldinho, Diego and Rafinha played in the game despite the recent Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) ruling allowing clubs to recall their players from the Olympic Games.

In group A Australia were held to a 1-1 draw by Serbia while the United States snatched a 1-0 win over Japan in group B.

Italy thrashed Honduras 3-0 to go top of the group D.
