Turkey…The Comeback Kings

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic called it the "X factor". That is the only way to explain how a team can, on three occasions, come from behind to achieve their goal.

impossible is nothing with turkey

Last gasp goals gave Turkey a victory 2-1 victory over Switzerland, followed by a 3-2 win over the Czech Republic.

The spree continued in Friday's quarter-final against Croatia when Ivan Klasnic put Croatia ahead in the 119th minute, but Bilic's team were stunned when Semih Senturk dramatically equalized deep in stoppage time.

Semih's goal forced a penalty shootout which the Turks won with great conviction.

"It was a shock for us, it seemed as if it was all over, and then we concede a goal and go on to the penalty shootout, that was certainly a psychological advantage for the Turks," said Bilic.

Man of the Day: Semih Senturk

Once again Semih comes off the bench to make all the difference for Turkey. He first did it when he was thrown into the fray at halftime against Switzerland, scoring the equalizer for Turkey.

He did it again against Croatia who were only seconds away from a place in the semi-finals.

Semih had come in as a second-half substitute and as usual impressed. He collected a loose ball in the Croatian are and took his shot. His deflected effort went past keeper Stipe Pletikosa, sending the game into a shootout.

The diminutive player played his part in the shootout and scored from the spot.

Goal of the Day: Klasnic's goal for Croatia

Just when everyone thought the game was going to a shootout, Ivan Klasnic once again rose to the occasion netting home clinically with one minute left in extra time.

Modric pounced on a mistake from Turkish keeper Rustu Recber who left his goal to catch the ball. However, Modric beats him to it and sends a baseline cross to Klasnic who slots home a header past the despairing Rustu.

Play of the Day: Croatian emotions

I don't know what was more emotional to see, the celebrations of the Croats and their coach after Klasnic's goal, which they thought would be the winner, or the tears that filled their faces after losing the shootout.

Klasnic seemed to be living the dream after scoring what could have been the winner for his team. The striker, who scored his second goal of the tournament, was overwhelmed by his teammates who were happy for him as much as they were happy for the potential progress.

Coach Bilic even ran half the length of the field to celebrate with his players beside the Turkish goal.

But less than half an hour later, these same excited faces were filled with tears, even veteran Dario Srna couldn't hold back the waterworks.

Quote of the Day: Guus Hiddink

Usually a person aims to be the hero for his/her country, however, for Dutchman Guus Hiddink it's completely different.

"I want to be the traitor of the year in Holland, because if I am the traitor of the year back home, it will have meant we won the game," joked Hiddink.

The former Holland coach will lead Russia against his home country when the two teams face off in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
"I don't know the words to the Russian national anthem, but I like the melody, so I will mime along," he said. "If I am going to be a traitor, I might as well do it properly."

RONALDO MUST FACE FERGUSON

It looks likely that Cristiano Ronaldo will face an uncomfortable few days after admitting he wants to leave Manchester United.

Ronaldo Vs Ferguson

The winger stated on Friday that it would be a "dream" and a "step forward" to sign for Real Madrid, and went on to confirm that Luiz Felipe Scolari's advice was a factor in his decisions.
"For me it is a great opportunity and, as Scolari says, that train passes by only once and we have to take advantage of it" said Ronaldo.
Ronaldo must now return to Manchester to face a presumably furious Alex Ferguson, but the winger's bravado/arrogance is such that he appears unconcerned about the 'hairdryer' related horrors that may await him.
"I don't know what I have to say to him," he said. "I have to say what I want and what I think.
"It is my opinion. That is why I don't mind if people get upset. It is my decision. It is what I want."
The Daily Mail claims that Ronaldo will have to meet an angry Ferguson - a man continuously irked by Real's constant pursuit of Ronaldo - when the players involved in Euro 2008 are expected to report for pre-season training on July 14.
Ferguson has expressed his confidence that Ronaldo will not be sold on a number of occasions, even going as far as to claim the Glazer family will leave him to "rot" in the stands rather than sell him.
However, whether in reality a club of even United's size can afford to pay Ronaldo's substantial wages and ignore potential bids of around £70million remains to be seen.
United seem determined not to let their man go without a fight, if at all. The club released a terse statement on their website on Friday morning, stating in no uncertain terms that they have no intention of selling their prize asset and best player.
'Further to Friday's press speculation about where Cristiano Ronaldo's future lies, the club has moved to reiterate its stance on the matter: United are not listening to offers. The club reaffirmed to ManUtd.com on Friday morning that the 23-year-old United star is 'not for sale.'

Pirlo's absence gives Spain its best chance

Just when Andrea Pirlo was showing his best form in a while, against France, he picks up his second yellow card and misses his match against Spain. In the absence of Italy's medio, you have to fancy Spain's chances. Previous meetings have been exercises in futility for Spain whose fragile psyche will be tested by the Italians who thrive on opportunism. But this is a Spain whose midfield is so gifted, that Cesc Fabregas comes on as a substitute for Xavi Fernandez. They also have Andres Iniesta who has had a muted tournament so far.
The find so far has been David Silva, a diminutive winger, who has been a live wire with his versatility, speed and outstanding ball control. He stretches the game out wide and uses both flanks equally well. Swedish defenders had a hard time stopping his crossing runs one of which led to the Torres goal.
Spain's game is very circumscribed. Their success lies in their midfield creating chances for Torres and Villa to score, rarely do they themselves avail of scoring opportunities. Against Sweden it became de riguer to watch 20- 30 passes strung together as the midfield probed the Swedish defense seeking supply lanes for the strikers to score. The Swedes were very good at crowding them out.
The tie was broken in heartbreaking fashion in extra time as David Villa latched onto a long ball beating the Swedish defenders. They will have to employ the same unorthodox methods against Italy which will be gearing up for Spain's control of the midfield. Italy on the other hand have won even with their biggest scoring threat, Luca Toni registering no goals.
Spain's weakest link remains the defence. Carlos Puyol and Carlos Marchena provide bulk but also a great deal of inertia, Puyol in particular has been slowed down by niggling injuries, Sergio Ramos has great pace but his defensive instincts are somewhat suspect. The one bright spot has been Marcos Senna, whose defensive organization is similar to that of Gilberto, while providing a threat on set pieces too.
